As a coach, it is important that I stay on top of labour market information. My clients need to know where the jobs are! This includes sectors, occupations and locations, and where job opportunities are on the increase or what skills are needed for them.
Statistical releases relating to labour and employment in Queensland are published by the Queensland Government Statisticians Office on a regular basis. The key themes reported for the June 30, 2019 quarter are as follows:
- As of June 30 2019, Queensland had a total of 2,509,959 people employed. This accounts for 19.7% of Australia’s total employment.
- Over the year to June 2019, the largest percentage increase in employment occurred in the Public Administration and Safety industry, up by 12.4%.
- Within Australia, the same industry also had the largest percentage increase, up by 13.3%.
- Public Administration generally refers to local, state and federal government employees with a mix of private employers.
- In comparison, the Retail industry recorded the largest detraction in Queensland by –0.4%.
- The highest percentage of total employment in Queensland was in the Health Care and Social Assistance industry, totally 14.0%. This will continue to rise.
- In Australia, the Health Care and Social Assistance industry increased by an overall total of 13.2%
- In comparison, the Retail trade industry recorded the largest detraction in Queensland of –0.4%
- The largest percentage increase in employment in Queensland occurred in the occupation group Professionals, which was up 8.5%.
- This was followed closely by Clerical and Administrative workers, up 4.1%.
- Third on the list was Trades and Technicians which is currently employing 14.4% of Queenslanders.
- The Sales Workers occupation group unfortunately recorded a large decrease in Queensland, down by –0.7%.
- In fact, over the past year, Sales Workers have dropped by 7.2% in total.
These figures can provide insights regarding the availability of jobs and trends in employment cycles. This can be important if you are considering changing careers as well.

Goal setting and goal planning is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future. It generates internal motivation so you can turn your dreams into reality. The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. This process takes time, deliberate thought and reflection. It also requires discipline, an emotional connection to the goal and a strong desire to succeed. Otherwise – why are you setting a goal?
Here’s the truth: Goal setting is hard. It’s hard because you must be willing to limit your options in the beginning. Goal planning absolutely works! However, life gets in the way sometimes. Along the road to your goal there will be obstacles and there will opportunities. My key piece of advice is to remain focused, stick to your plan, yet be flexible to change – otherwise known as adapting to life’s road bumps.
Here are a few tips, strategies and options that you can follow to manage your expectations and be realistic about achieving your goals:
- When you hit an obstacle, take a moment to put things in perspective and then make a list of the things that you have control over. What don’t you have control over in this situation? What can you change? What can’t you change?
- If a new opportunity arises weigh up the pros and cons. If you took this opportunity will it completely derail my goal or is just a sideways step that might led to something awesome. No one is perfect, you can give yourself permission to be flexible.
- Make a list of all the things you DO NOT WANT to happen in reference to your goals. Focus on removing the obstacles and only look at what you do want to happen every day. Concentrate on moving forward by focusing on the positive and what you learned to keep you on track.
- You get what you focus on, so be conscious of the commands you are giving to your subconscious. Silence your inner skeptic with positive thinking and affirmations.
- Stay faithful to the main goal and not just the plan as you may be presented with new or exciting life opportunities along your path.
- If you find yourself in a rut but feel like you are working hard towards your goal, step back and assess exactly what you are following through with. Am I following through with the plan or with the goal?
- The plan might be outdated or just wrong to begin with. If you are truly following through with your goals, you may need to continue with your existing plan, mix it up or take a break. Be flexible enough to choose your best option.
- Create a visual or even a drawing of how you would like things to be after reaching your goal. Make a habit of thinking about your vision every day. Be open to ideas and people that might assist you on your journey.
- Make a game out of it for yourself or compete with a friend to incorporate the new ideas into your life if this type of activity inspires you to action.
- Don’t let you action plan or vision board get covered up with clutter. The visual reminder will keep you processing the new thoughts.
- Hire a coach to work with you to implement an action plan for your vision and remove any obstacles in your way like fear, doubt or negative self-talk.
Life is a series of small decisions and whole lives can be changed because of an apparently small decision. Everything we do, every decision and choice we make has some purpose. Taking charge of your life means having your own purpose and setting your own goals. All successful people have goals, don’t let others set them for you. Remember goals are dreams with legs – they go somewhere.
Well, 2019 has kicked off with a bang here at Life Path Career Coaching. I have had an influx of clients, excited and motivated to progress or change their career, apply for new roles and more importantly achieve their goals. What are your plans for this year?
I thought it might be helpful to talk about goal setting for the next 12 months. The following questions are designed to elicit key areas of importance that you want to focus on. Start by setting aside 30 minutes and find somewhere you can relax and sink into these questions. Perhaps you are in a local coffee shop with air conditioning and with your favourite latte, or at home with a cup of tea or glass of wine. Answer these eight coaching questions to consider your actions for the year ahead.
- What is missing in your life right now?
- What 3 changes would make the biggest difference in your life right now?
- Where do you need to make a positive difference in your life (health, finances, relationships, career, environment?)
- If you were to FULLY live your life, what is the first change you would start to make?
- What would you try if you knew you could not fail?
- If you dared to say it aloud, what would you make happen in your career/life?
- If there was an outcome you were secretly looking for, what would it be?
- When do you want to achieve this by?
The next step is to identify five items for the other list of questions, answering them intuitively from the heart. This isn’t about what “looks good” to others, instead think about what YOU are ready to achieve this year.
- What do you want to create in your life this year?
Think broadly – it could be anything at all that has your unique stamp on it! Now write down five items.
- How specifically will you make a difference in your life?
Big or small, how will you help your family, wider community, friends, colleagues, what could you do to improve or change your situation. Again, write down five action items that are realistic.
- Where will have fun?
We all need fun and happiness in our life. Write out five things that you can do during the year that you consider as fun. It can inexpensive, an indulgence, birthday treats or going to the beach.
After you have listed out all your responses, go back and choose the most important. Next rank them in order or priority. I suggest writing a list of up 10 action items. Finally transfer this to a clean piece of paper and place it on a wall or mirror where you can visualise it and read it every day. It also helps to draw pictures associated with the activities – your right brain will become more engaged each time you see it. Enjoy the process and I trust it will set you up for a wonderful 12 months.
