One of my favourite quotes that I use in coaching is to “The past is behind, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it. The present is here, live it”.
It comes from Thomas S. Monson, an American religious leader and 16th President for The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. I know nothing about Thomas S. Monson. In fact, I had to Google him to find out more information! I am an atheist; nonetheless, his words, quotes and wisdom ring true.
What have you learnt from the past? Perhaps you still focussed on something that happened over 10 years ago. History does not have a habit of repeat itself when we learn from feedback. It is your choice to let go of the past or keep replaying the same scenario repeatedly in your head. What purpose will that serve you? Will a different result eventuate? No.
Do you live in the present? If you are reading this blog, then you are living in the moment and being in the here and now. Look out the window, what do you see, hear and feel? Do you actually stop to smell the roses? It is important to consider your actions for today and keep your energy focussed on the present. This is where we all are right now. Do you feel fantastic waking up each morning and breathing in the air? Yes.
Are you preparing for future? A plan for the future can be designed and implemented in several ways. However, in coaching, I recommend using a S.M.A.R.T Goal that lists your priorities and actions. This plan can be relevant for 3 months, 6 months or even 3 years! I have a S.M.A.R.T Goal and actions that my husband and I tick over every few months. Sure, we may not get certain actions completed on time and there is the chaos theory that may rear its head occasionally; however, our plan is realistic, purposeful and propels us forward with enthusiasm. Does having a goal or action plan create motivation? Yes.
Having a plan for your future career or life is an important touchstone for staying focussed. It brings with it positive energy and a commitment to something that you will complete, or a goal you will achieve.
So where is your energy focussed? On the past, the present or future? Remember you cannot go back and change anything that has happened in the past. You can however, live in the moment, reach your dreams and plan for the future!
